A Portland fuel company is collecting grease from restaurants and turning it into green energy.

Maine Standard Bio-Fuels collects grease from more than 500 restaurants around New England. They currently bring in about 25 gallons a week from each restaurant. Standard then separates the chemical components of the grease to make certain products. Some of the bio-fuel is sold as heating oil, motor oil and even a kitchen cleaning agent! Irony!

Standard sells its fuel to Oakhurt Dairy's to power their fleet of trucks. In addition, they sell fuel at their pump outside their plant, and to their nearly 100 heating fuel customers.

The benefits of bio-diesel are well known by now. Production recycles waste, takes few natural racecourses and creates a less polluting fuel.

Thanks french fries!
