A Lyman man who told police he was not carrying drugs is now facing trafficking charges after a drug-sniffing canine determined he was lying.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says State Police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation just after seven o'clock Tuesday evening on the Alfred Road in Kennebunk. The driver, 20-year-old Matthew Petrucci of Lyman, was operating with a suspended license and was removed from the vehicle.

When the Trooper located a scale, he asked Petrucci if he was carrying any drugs and the man said no. A State Police narcotics K-9 responded to the scene and indicated a positive alert to the odor of illegal narcotics on Petrucci. However, the suspect still insisted he was not carrying any drugs.

Petrucci was arrested for Operating After Suspension and taken to the York County Jail, where he finally admitted that he did, indeed, have drugs. Officers then seized approximately 21 grams of suspected heroin from the man's groin area. He was subsequently charged with Aggravated Trafficking in Heroin and his bail was set at $10,000 cash. Petrucci is expected to make his first court appearance in July.
