According to the CDC Maine is one of 14 states with a dramatic increase in overdose deaths the past year.

Maine experienced a 27.3% increase in overdose deaths according to the CDC's report. That's huge!

The highest overdose rates were in West Virginia, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Kentucky and Ohio.

States with statistically significant increases in the rate from 2013 to 2014 included Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maine.

For the nation, overdose deaths last year surpassed 47,000 -that’s up 7 percent from the previous year. It’s also the most reported in the nation since at least 1970.
