Two men were arrested and charged with trafficking in scheduled drugs after trying to run from police.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the vehicle was stopped along Route 202 in Alfred on Monday, but then sped off. State Police Trooper James MacDonald caught up with the car a short time later, parked in a driveway, missing its rear license plate. The driver, 25-year-old Ryan Benoit of Bridgton, and his passenger, 29-year-old Donald Wintermute of Sanford, were standing outside the vehicle.

Benoit struggled with Trooper MacDonald briefly in the driveway, before being handcuffed and placed in the cruiser. Somehow, despite the handcuffs, he was able to unbuckle his seat belt and open the passenger door. Benoit tried to flee but was caught within seconds and re-secured.

By this time, other troopers, MDEA agents, and a York County Deputy had arrived on the scene to assist. Recovered from the scene was a loaded 9mm handgun, almost 25 grams of cocaine, and 10 grams of heroin. All of the items were found on the ground, and troopers suspect they had fallen out of Benoit's jacket as he fought with the trooper.

Benoit and Wintermute are charged with aggravated trafficking in class A scheduled drugs. Benoit was already on probation for a prior drug charge and will now face additional charges of being in possession of a firearm, escape, resisting arrest, eluding an officer, and operating after suspension.

Both men were taken to the York County Jail.
