A police-involved shooting in Old Town started with a traffic stop of a vehicle with New Hampshire plates.

Old Town Police said at a media conference this afternoon that Officer Joseph Decoteau pulled over a grey Silverado pickup truck at 3:20 a.m. on Thursday. An armed confrontation ensued between the officer and the driver, 37-year-old Adrian Bunker of Merrimack, New Hampshire.  Bunker was killed in the incident. The officer wasn't hurt.

Decoteau has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation by the Old Town Police and the Attorney General's Office. This is standard procedure for all police-involved shootings.

Bunker's Facebook profile says he lived in Merrimack, but went to high school at Piscataquis Community High School in Guilford, Maine.

Old Town Police were assisted by the Orono Police Department, Veazie Police Department, the Penobscot County Sheriff's Department, Old Town Fire Department, Penobscot Regional Dispatch, Maine Warden Service, Bangor Police, Maine State Police, State Fire Marshal's Office, and the University of Maine Police Department.
