Mainers are now allowed to carry concealed handguns without a permit.

The new law, which went into effect on Thursday, ends a mandatory permit system that had been in effect for more than 90 years.

It applies to people who are 21 or older and military members who are at least 18 years old.

However, prohibitions on where firearms can be carried remain. In Maine, it's illegal to carry a gun in places like courthouses, state parks, schools and federal buildings.

The controversial gun law has sparked criticism from gun control advocates.

What do you think about the new law?
