A single-car crash in Augusta split a car into two pieces and sent two people to the hospital.

Augusta Fire and Rescue reports the accident happened  at around 6:00 Thursday night on the Townsend Road, in the area of Barnes & Noble. Initial reports said that the Mitsubishi Lancer had been split in half as it struck several small trees.

The Townsend Road was shut down for several hours as firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free two people from the vehicle and cleared the scene. Centralmaine.com says the driver, 35-year-old Andrew Lufkin of Gardiner. was issued summonses for Driving to Endanger and OUI. Alcohol and speed appeared to be factors in the crash, rather than weather, according to police. There's no word on how badly Lufkin and his passenger were hurt.

The accident remains under investigation.
