Even though marijuana is technically legal in Portland, cops will still bust you.

Police in Maine's largest city are balancing enforcement with restraint when it comes to possessing pot. The Portland Press Herald reports from January through September, police issued 23 marijuana citations. That's almost half as many as the same time last year. In 2014 Portland police issued 44 marijuana possession citations.

The info was released in an annual report detailing the enforcement of Portland's recreational marijuana ordnance. This report is required as per guidelines stated in the ordnance. It will be reviewed by Portland City Council’s Public Safety, Health and Human Services Committee.

Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck told the newspaper officers are 'not seeking out violations of Maine’s civil possession law, nor are they failing to enforce the law when the situation requires it.'

Maine has decriminalized any amount of marijuana under 2.5 ounces to a civil offense. Fines top out at $600.
