The Augusta Police Department will meet with the district attorney’s office in the next few days to discuss its findings and possible criminal charges in connection with a near-drowning involving a two-year-old boy.

The boy was pulled from the Kennebec River near the East Side Boat Landing Friday night. A witness who spotted the boy in the water, Sean Scanlon of Dresden Mills, jumped into the river and rescued the child.

Scanlon tried to resuscitate the boy, who was turning blue and wasn't breathing. Emergency crews took over lifesaving care after arriving on the scene. Paramedics said the boy became responsive before he was transported to a local hospital.

Police haven't released the child's name or the names of his parents. They also haven't said where the parents were at the time of the incident.

Augusta police will meet with the DA's office within the next day or two to discuss possible charges, the department said in a news release on Tuesday.

According to the release, "the prognosis for the two-year-old victim is still uncertain."
