Celebrating 15 Years of Saving Lives

You have a chance to check out the Life Flight helicopter service today and tomorrow as the nonprofit celebrates 15 years of service to Maine residents.

Currently two helicopters, owned and operated jointly by Eastern Maine and Central Maine HealthCare Services, are flown in Maine and have cared for over 15-thousand critically ill and injured patients.

One of those patients saved by Life Flight was 10 year old Abi Martin and her dad Jeremy Martin spoke recently at EMMC describing those horrible moments following Abi’s skiing accident at Sugarloaf.

"Once we took off, we were here at Eastern Maine within 20 minutes which was truly remarkable. When we landed were were greeted by a team of trauma staff who were waiting for Abi," explained Martin.

Life Flight saved the Martins precious time and Abi has recovered. Her story is just one of many.

Life Flight will be on display for the public during Open House events this afternoon in Lewiston, and tomorrow in Bangor at EMMC from 10:30 to 1:30.

Spokeswoman Melissa Arndt says plans are in the works for Life Flight to expand its service with the purchase of a third helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft made possible through private funding.

Folks visiting will have a chance to see the helicopters up close and meet the medical teams.
