Case Against Man Accused Of Threatening Soccer Players Dropped

Penobscot County Jail
Penobscot County Jail

A man who’s accused of threatening some Bangor soccer players with a handgun will not face charges.

District Attorney Chris Almy told the BDN that there was no way to prove enough elements of the case beyond a reasonable doubt to make it worthy of being prosecuted. The case involved soccer players from Bangor High School who were chasing a ball at the Union Street Athletic Field, which abuts 40-year-old Steven Butler’s property. The students have said that they were not on his property, but Butler told police that he saw six people on his lawn.

Butler was arrested and his firearm confiscated, at the time of the incident. He’s been out on $5,000 unsecured bail with conditions that he not use or possess drugs, alcohol, or firearms. Once police are given the official word from the courts that the charges have been dropped, Butler will be able to retrieve his firearm.

The City of Bangor has put up a fence around the field, which Butler told the BDN is a relief. He’s lived at the property for 18 months and says he suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. He said the fence is a good thing, giving him some relief from the stress of worrying that someone might come onto his lawn.

Going forward, the Bangor School Department has the option of taking out a protection order against Butler and asking the judge to continue the criminal trespass order that kept him away from the field after the incident.
