You may have noticed some construction along the Brewer waterfront over the past few weeks. Whats the deal?

The trail is a project the city is undertaking with help by federal funding. The trail system extends from Wilson street to the former public works site. The trail is the start of what could eventually be a city wide trail system.

So far, the path has been cleared for crews to lay down gravel in preparation for paving. In addition, light poles will be added to the approximately 1,900 foot trail.

The project is being funded by a 2005 earmark for $1.8 million. The earmark doesn't list specific projects, but they have to be for transportation improvements. The city of Brewer has been working with the Maine Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration on the trail project.
