Brewer Police are taking part in a national program that aims to make the police more accessible and familiar to community members. The first 'Coffee With a Cop' event is planned for next week.

Brewer Police Chief Deputy Jason Moffitt says, most of the time when people interact with the police, it's a stressful situation. Even if it's something as simple as a fender bender, or being pulled over for having a headlight out, there's stress involved. And the unfortunate side effect is that people tend to associate the uniform with stress. That's not the relationship members of law enforcement want, so they're doing something about it.

Enter a national campaign called 'Coffee With a Cop.' Residents are invited to join members of the Brewer Police Department for a casual, informal morning of coffee at a local restaurant. Moffitt says there's no agenda. They're just inviting community members to come in and chat about any concerns they have, ask questions about how the department works, or even if they just want to meet the officers.

If all goes as planned, this will be the first of several 'Coffee with a Cop' events this summer. So, if you can't make it to this one, there will be other opportunities to connect, in a casual atmosphere, with the men and women of the Brewer Police Department.

The first 'Coffee With a Cop' event will be held Wednesday, May 20th from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Tim Horton's in Brewer. For more information, log onto the Brewer Police Department's Facebook Page.
