A 91-year-old Brewer man is being treated for a broken hip after his car was struck by a State Police cruiser in Brewer on Wednesday.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says Trooper Darren Vittum was responding to a domestic violence call in Bradley just before one o'clock Wednesday afternoon when the accident happened. He was traveling north on North Main Street in Brewer, with his lights and siren on, when a car driven by 91-year-old Arthur Sites pulled out from Parkway North into the path of the cruiser. Vittum swerved, but his cruiser hit the front driver's side before coming to rest against a utility pole.

Vittum suffered bumps and bruises in the accident. Sites is being treated for a broken hip. The pole was damaged but did not break. Other troopers responded to the call that Vittum was headed toward, and took a woman into custody for evaluation.
