A 12-year-old boy and two 13-year-old boys have been arrested and charged with arson in connection with a fire that destroyed an old mill building Friday in Sanford.

The arrests were made Sunday and early Monday morning, Steven McCausland, spokesmen for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in a news release late Monday morning.

They were taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland. Court appearances were expected to be scheduled after paperwork is filed Monday in Sanford District Court.

Fire marshals were expected to be assisted at the scene Monday by investigators from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as state police, Sanford police and the Sanford Fire Department.

McCausland said excavation equipment would be brought to the site to help stabilize the building.

The fire at the Stenton Trust Mill was reported Friday at 6:50 p.m. More than 100 firefighters from 20 communities helped knock down the flames.

Two homeless men who had been staying inside the building were unaccounted for after the fire but, the men were located safe in Portland Monday morning, the release said.
