The project has been 10 years in the making and it's going to require patience and a lot of alert driving in the city of Bangor.

The 54-year old overpass crossing Interstate I-95 is being replaced and that two-and-a-half year long project, because of its location, will impact thousands of motorists and city residents.

Troy Devoe is the Maine Department of Transportation's Resident Engineer and he says 19,000 cars a day travel Union Street and 44,000 a day cross below on the Interstate.

Devoe says the logistics involved in this project are immense and have taken into consideration everything from the building of temporary roads for detour routes to emergency response access.

When it's all said and done there will be a new bridge with an additional lane to relieve congestion, higher clearance for vehicles passing underneath on the Interstate, and better sidewalks.

You're asked to drive slowly and pay attention to road workers and detour signs.
