It's funny how you take things for granted until it's no longer there or no longer easily attainable. West Market Square in downtown Bangor was such a place for my wife and me. There have been many times we would stop into Paddy Murphy's or Ipanema's for a cold beverage or a bite to eat. And now that the new 'Blaze' restaurant has opened their doors we can't wait for the West Market Square work to be finished. But if you're like me, the thought of trudging through and around construction work, equipment and debris is just not that appealing. And of course parking is a bit of a challenge too, but the work had to be done. You can bet that all the businesses in that area have seen some lost revenue.

The above picture was taken on Memorial Day of this year, with the work actually beginning in April. But with parts of the sewer system dating back to the Civil War era, I'd say it needed to get done. The wider walkways and aesthetic upgrades will be well worth the wait. And according to Public Works Director, Dana Wardwell, some newly discovered underground electrical problems will push the completion date to somewhere around the end of September.
