Police say the person found dead in a Bangor supermarket parking lot over the weekend appears to have been struck by a vehicle elsewhere in the city and dragged.

Officers were called to the Hannaford store on Union Street at about 8 p.m. Saturday for the report of a person struck by a car.

Bangor police Sgt. Cathy Rumsey says the victim, 43 year old Larry Furbush, was struck on Vermont Avenue by 48 year old Darren Matheson of New Brunswick who was unaware of the man being under the vehicle.

Weather conditions, poor visibility, and the victims dark colored clothing are all considered factors in this accident.

As per state guidelines for investigating fatal accidents, toxicology tests were done on both the driver and the victim. Those test results are pending.

There were no indications at the time of the accident that the driver was under the influence.

No charges have been filed.
