A Bangor man was injured when the van he was driving struck a tractor trailer from behind on the interstate.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the accident happened just before eight o'clock Saturday morning on Interstate 95 in Fairfield. Both the Mercury Villager van, driven by 56-year-old Kenneth Billings of Bangor, and the Freightliner tractor trailer, driven by 40-year-old Mason Markley of Connecticut, were heading south in the travel lane when the semi was struck from behind by the van

Witnesses told police that Billings was operating erratically and at a high rate of speed just before the accident. He had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to Maine General Hospital, and then transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland with multiple injuries.

The tractor trailer was carrying paper products and headed to Arizona. Police shut down the travel lane of the interstate for over four hours while crews cleared the scene. Fairfield Police and Fire Departments, Waterville Fire, and Delta Ambulance all assisted at the crash site.
