Bangor City Councilors on Monday voted to ban smoking in parks with playgrounds, swimming pools and other amenities that attract children.

Councilors voted 8-1 to move forward with the smoking ban, which was intended to protect families from secondhand smoke and promote general public health.

A resident originally proposed banning smoking in all city parks, but the council's government operations committee directed staff to focus on places frequented by children.

The ban includes cigarettes, cigars, pipes and vaporizers.

The city is expected to install signs at the parks included in the ordinance.
