Two Bangor area women were arrested after MDEA agents seized a half-pound of heroin early Thursday morning, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a press release.

Monique Nichols, 24, of Hudson, and Wanda Wyman, 53, of Bangor, were each charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin.

The drugs were being brought in from New York for resale in greater Bangor, McCausland said.

Drug agents say the street value of the heroin was $60,000, the equivalent of 2,300 doses.

The arrests come after investigators with the Maine Correctional Center in Windham and drug agents started an investigation into an inmate who was coordinating the drug importation from inside the prison, the release said.

The inmate was arrested by drug agents in April 2015 after he was found in possession of 50 grams of heroin. The man is now serving a five-year prison sentence after being convicted of aggravated trafficking in heroin. The MDEA has not released the name of the inmate because he has not yet been charged in connection with the drug activity he was allegedly coordinating from inside the prison.

Wednesday, drug agents learned that Nichols and Wyman had left Bangor to pick up heroin in New York City, the release said.

At about 2 a.m. on Thursday, the women’s vehicle was stopped by drug agents and Bangor police as it exited I-95 onto Hammond Street.

Drug agents say the heroin, along with $1,000, was recovered from one of the women's purses.

The two were taken to the Penobscot County Jail. Bail was set at $2,000 for Nichols and $50,000 for Wyman.

McCausland said drug agents will continue to work closely with the Maine Correctional Center and more arrests are likely.
