Joe Baldacci was unanimously selected as the city's council chairman and mayor at  a Monday morning meeting.

Baldacci, an attorney, last served as the city's mayor in 1999, according to his biography on the city's website.

"We have a great Council and we will have a positive year of keeping Bangor moving forward" Baldacci said in a Facebook post, within which he thanked his fellow councilors for their support.

Unlike many cities, Bangor does not elect a mayor through a popular vote. Instead it is a ceremonial title for the city council chairman, which is selected by the council.

Baldacci's term expires in 2017.
