‘American Idol’ May Cut All Four Judges to Reinvent Itself
‘American Idol‘ used to be the hottest show on television, but after 13 years, it’s starting to show its age. The show’s ratings have slipped from regularly having 30 million viewers to now somewhere around 11 million. And though the show has had some different judges over the course of its run, it’s now looking to ditch all four current judges to have a fresh face for season 13.
Currently, the show is being judged by Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and sole remaining original judge Randy Jackson. According to a report from The Wrap, all are looking to be let go along with the show’s current producer Nigel Lythgoe. And though there was word that previous judge Jennifer Lopez might return, that’s also being nixed.
Though it still has a good foothold in the ratings (in television’s current climate, it’s viewership is nothing to sneeze at), not only has the show’s numbers slipped to a series low, ‘American Idol’ has been losing ground to ‘The Voice,’ which has been siphoning away ratings and much of the desired 18- to 49-year-old demographic over the course of its four year run. The question with this reboot is who they can bring in to replace the four, and to that matter original judges Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul. Post-Lopez, Carey and J. Lo, it’s hard to say who they could get who has more wattage. Perhaps a Beatle or a Rolling Stone.
