The Warden Service has released the identity of a man who fell into an Alton pond on Sunday and drowned.

Corporal John MacDonald said in a press release that 57-year-old Paul Malicky from the Doliff Road in Alton had gone out on a farm pond shortly after noon Sunday to tend his bait fish traps. As he returned to shore at around 1:00, he apparently fell into the water while getting out of his canoe. Malicky's wife Lynn called neighbors and 911 for help, but by the time assistance arrived, he had drifted from shore and had gone underwater.

Units from Old Town, Orono, and Alton Fire Departments responded, along with several Maine Game Wardens. A search of the pond was conducted immediately. Just before 4:30 Sunday afternoon, divers recovered the man's body in nine feet of water. The case remains under investigation.
