Each year, the Penobscot County Conservation Association puts on a free Family Ice Fishing event to promote sporting heritage and wildlife preservation in our state. In all my years as a Mainer, I had never been ice fishing up until a few years ago, when a friend of mine suggested we take our kids and try it out. I can tell you, it was a memory my children still talk about to this day. Was it cold? Yes. But it was totally worth braving the elements to see the look on their faces when those flags would go up and they got to pull a fish from the frozen water.

This year, the event has been scheduled to take place on Sunday February 14th.

According to the Family Ice Fishing Event Facebook Page, it will take place from 9AM until 2PM on LeVasseur Pond. The PCCA will have pre-drilled holes and pre-placed traps set out for the kiddos, with all equipment and bait provided.

" Catch one take it home! Activities monitored, supervised & taught by experienced fishers, sportsmen & women. Please dress warmly!"

The event is free to all kids from toddlers right on up to the age of 15, so if you have kids who have never tried ice-fishing before, this would be a great way to give them a taste of what that experience is like.

They mention that all children must be accompanied by an adult. And if it looks like there might be a storm that would bring a lot of rain or snow to the area, they will likely reschedule, so keep an eye on the event page if the weather looks iffy.
