Fall Festival weekend at Sunday River Resort (October 11-12) is “kind of a big deal.” Sunday, however, has always played second fiddle to Saturday and the North American Wife Carrying Championship. This year, Sunday’s staging a coup with the first-ever New England Cornhole Championship, a bloody mary extravaganza, and a stellar lineup of live music.

On Sunday, October 12, 32 teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament for the glorious title of 2014 New England Cornhole Champions, along with $500 in cash prizes. The latest addition to Sunday River’s Fall Festival weekend is sanctioned by the American Cornhole Association, which is a real, very official thing.

The inaugural New England Cornhole Championship competitor field is completely full, but the good news is that there’s a waiting list and your name could be on it. Each team must have at least one member over the age of 18 and the entry fee is $15, which is only collected if the wait-listed team actually participates in the tournament and benefits the Sunday River Charitable Fund. For more info on how to join the waiting list, visit sundayriver.com.

“Sunday Bloody Sunday” is Sunday River’s new bloody mary buffet with over 25 fixings. Find the tent at South Ridge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A little Tobasco and maybe some chili-flavored vodka are the perfect way to kick start your Sunday and keep the weekend alive.

The Pete Kilpatrick Band and The Mallett Brothers Band will be playing free, live concerts at South Ridge from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. These native Maine bands have both enjoyed widespread success and toured nationally, and they’re sure to provide the perfect audio accompaniment to all of Fall Festival Sunday’s epic activities.

Too many bloodies? Make it a long weekend and stay the night at one of the resort’s hotels. And don’t forget that Fall Festival weekend is your last chance for pre-season savings on a 2014-15 New England Pass.
