An 11-year-old boy on a skateboard suffered life-threatening injuries when he collided with a car in South Portland.

The Portland Press Herald reports the accident happened at around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. The boy was skateboarding on Palmer Street and collided with a Toyota sedan as he entered the intersection with Elm Street. He was taken by ambulance to a Portland hospital and his family was notified.

Now, police are working to determine exactly what happened, whether the boy rode out in front of the car, or whether he struck the car's right front fender. Investigators say the driver, who name hasn't been released, is cooperating with police.
